Staszic Mine Modernization
Katowice, Poland
For the Polish Katowice Coal Holding Company, Roberts & Schaefer
modernized the coal preparation plant and screening station at
the Staszic mine, added new conveyors, a 6,000 metric ton concrete
coal storage silo, and combined reclaim and coal blending facilities.
The project is a marriage of U.S. and Polish technologies, with
R&S providing the basic engineering and the Poles supplying
the conveyors.
The U.S.-designed 20-meter diameter silo is supported on a Polish-designed
foundation. The foundation is a reinforced concrete slab 3 meters
thick by 23 meters wide by 32 meters long, resting on 350 compacted
stone piles sunk to an average depth of 7 meters.
