Amax Coal Company
Coal Receiving and Crushing Facilities Expansion
Eagle Butte Mine
Gillette, Wyoming
Roberts & Schaefer provided complete project management,
detailed engineering, procurement, and construction management
services at Amax Coal Company's Eagle Butte Mine, to double the
capacity of its coal receiving and crushing facilities. In a novel
design, what would otherwise be lost heat from the dust collection
system is instead recovered to efficiently preheat incoming outside
air, reducing heating costs.
The facility addition, which increases capacity from 4,000 TPH
to 8,000 TPH, includes a new truck dump hopper, fitted with two
84 inch apron feeders that move coal to two two-stage quad-roll
crushers, each of which discharges onto one 72 inch wide collecting
conveyor.
Subsidiary facilities include an electrical boiler plant for
heating and a dust collection system meeting Federal and state
air quality standards. The otherwise lost heat from the dust collection
system is directed through a heat exchanger and used to preheat
incoming outside air for the heating system.
