Hearth Layer Plant
Silver Bay Processing Facility
Silver Bay, Minnesota
Roberts & Schaefer provided engineering, procurement, and
construction services to add a hearth layer system to taconite
pellet machines 11 and 12 at the then-inactive processing facility.
R&S increased plant capacity and coordinated reactivation
of the existing facility and the new hearth layer system. Extreme
time constraints required R&S to use pre-assembled conveyor
structures, ductwork, chute work, and piping, to minimize assembly
in the field. The entire project was completed in four and a half
months.
Taconite pellets for the hearth layer come from pellet discharge
chutes on machines 11 and 12. Each chute has a diverter gate to
direct pellets to either a process transfer conveyor or to individual
collecting conveyors, which move them to the first green pellet
elevating conveyor. From there, the pellets move to an external
transfer tower and a second transfer conveyor. It in turn elevates
the pellets to three transfer conveyors that feed a combination
feed chute and diverter gate, which recycles pellets either to
machine 11 or to machine 12 via an additional transfer conveyor.
The entire system is fitted with bag house type dust collectors.
R&S provided a complete process control system, tied into
the existing facility.
