Monsanto Industrial Chemicals Company
Material Handling Operations Study
Soda Springs, Idaho
Roberts & Schaefer provided engineering services for a material
handling study at Monsanto Industrial Chemicals' Soda Springs,
Idaho phosphorus plant. The study consisted of four phases. Phase
1 collected and evaluated data for the existing operation, and
produced operating cost and task models. Phase 2 developed recommendations
that would provide significant savings and improved system reliability.
Phase 3 expanded the recommendations for, and economic evaluation
of, improvements in the existing mechanical process equipment.
If adopted, further reductions in mobile equipment operation would
result, through automation and minor capital expenditure. Phase
4 provided an evaluation of alternative material-handling strategies.
The study had two overall objectives. First, to optimize capital
and operating costs for various configurations of the operation,
and second, to provide cost data with plus or minus 30 percent
accuracy, enabling Monsanto to select the most cost-effective
implementation.
