Landfill Remediation and Closure Study
New York State
Roberts & Schaefer prepared a work plan to remediate and
close a solid waste landfill established within the watershed
of a perennial stream. The stream's water quality is degraded
by rainfall migrating through the landfill and entering the stream.
The plan proposes that remediation be paid for by selling reclaimed
recyclable materials from the landfill.
The landfill contains a variety of wastes, including slag, metal
scrap, electric ore furnace dust, lime, neutralized wastewater
treatment sludge, demolition debris, and soil. Some portions of
the landfill are 70 to 80 feet deep.
The plan's key elements include constructing collection and control
systems for storm runoff and seepage, excavating and removing
solid waste from the north face area, and regrading and benching
the exposed native soils to improve slope stability, including
capping and replacing vegetation.
