Kennecott Copper
Locomotive Repair Facility
Roberts & Schaefer Company provided engineering &
design services for the completion of a new locomotive repair
station. This repair station is for used to repair and refurbish
locomotive trucks (under carriage drive system on locomotives)
owned by Kennecott. The new repair facility included a hydraulic
station for dropping the trucks from the bottom of the locomotives;
space for repairing two trucks including a location for storing
repaired trucks and a turnover station to assist with the repair
of the trucks. The facility also included a bay for the repair
and maintenance of rail cars (which transport the ore), a machine
shop area, MCC room and a Compressor room. Due to the need to
have locomotives operate inside the facility, a large system of
roof fans and wall louvers were designed to move the tremendous
amount of air required to keep the exhaust from building up in
the building.
Office
space was included with the new facility and included a conference
room, break-room, bathrooms and change-rooms with showers. The
offices run the full length of the building with some offices
having windows that overlook the repair bays.
