Waste Stabilization Facility
Utah
For this low-level nuclear waste stabilization facility, Roberts
& Schaefer prepared drawings and specifications for regulatory
authorities, and reviewed permit applications for technical accuracy.
The project's special design requirements included lined "tanks"
at each of the material handling locations, dust collection throughout
the facility, a testing laboratory, and facilities for personnel
decontamination.
Fluid Tech, Inc. constructed this facility at Envirocare of Utah's
waste disposal site. Waste can consist of soils, concrete, sludge,
filter cake, and steel drums, and is dumped into a receiving area
inside the facility. Processing within the facility can include
screening, shredding, crushing, and washing. The processed and
classified waste materials are mixed with selected reagents and
water to chemically bind hazardous waste constituents. Treated
waste is then transported to licensed sites for burial.
