Brandon
Shores, Unit 1 & 2
Anne Arundel County, Maryland
For the two new 620 MW units of the Brandon Shores Power Plant
on the Patapso River, Baltimore Gas & Electric Company turned
to Roberts & Schaefer for complete project management, detailed
engineering, procurement and construction services under a turnkey
contract.
This coal handling facility receives coal by 7,000-ton capacity
barges requiring extensive marine works including a dock for three
barges, jetty way, and a barge hauling system to move barges during
unloading. A 4,000 TPH continuous bucket elevator barge unloader
was installed on the new jetty way. Assembly of the barge unloader
was handled in an innovative way; the entire machine was assembled
on the shore and moved in one piece by a floating barge crane.
This project had unique construction challenges due to the seasonal
availability of river access and interface restrictions with the
power block general contractor.
