Continental Energy Associates
Hazleton Gasification Project
Hazleton, Pennsylvania
R&S furnished engineering, procurement and construction
services for a 600 TPH anthracite culm handling and processing
complex at Continental Energy Associates'
Hazleton, Pennsylvania Gasification project. As the first such
plant for processing anthracite culm, the extremely abrasive nature
of the material provided many design challenges and required unusually
wear-resistant materials. The entire project was completed in
14 months.
As part of an overall electric generating facility, anthracite
culm is used as a fuel for atmospheric gasification. The facility
reclaims anthracite culm from existing local banks and beneficiates
it to specific thermal quality and size. The process begins at
a hillside truck dump fitted with a protective grizzly and reclaim
vibratory feeder. Raw anthracite culm is delivered to a processing
plant where it is pre-screened to eliminate oversize material
before cleaning.
A Baum jig is used for beneficiation, with a water clarification
circuit, consisting of a clarifying cyclone thickener and a settling
pond. The processed anthracite culm is rescreened, crushed, and
sorted into sizes suitable for use in gasification.
