Geneva Steel
Coke Gas Desulfurization Plant
Orem, Utah
When
Geneva Steel lost confidence in the engineering firm originally
selected for this project, they turned to Roberts & Schaefer
to complete the design and redesign work on their Orem, Utah coke
gas desulfurization plant. The work included re-layout of the
sulphaban HCN reactor area to correct placement of several heat
exchangers and modifications to the HCN structure to support a
third level. It also included, detailed routing and thermal stress
analysis of all piping, spool drawings of piping, design of all
pipe supports, and programming of the computer control system.
A variety of piping was used, including carbon steel, 304 stainless
steel, 410 stainless steel, and titanium, to withstand temperatures
of up to 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the work was done on-site
in portable office space.
