Project Background

Roberts & Schaefer Company was awarded a contract from PacifiCorp for engineering, procurement, and commissioning of the unit train unloading and conveying system at PacifiCorp’s Dave Johnson Plant in Glenrock, Wyoming. The system was successfully completed and in operation in 2000.

The unit train unloading system is designed to receive coal from trains at the rapid discharge rail unloading facility. The receiving hopper discharges to two variable speed belt feeders with a maximum capacity of 2,200 TPH each. These belt feeders move coal to a single overland conveyor with a capacity of 4,400 TPH. This 2,900 feet long overland conveyor feeds a radial stacker. The radial stacker has a 240–foot long boom conveyor and discharges through a telescopic chute. The radial stacker can slew a total of 240 degrees and can stackout automatically. The stacker forms two storage piles with capacities of 92,300 tons and 68,700 tons over existing reclaim hoppers. The reclaim hoppers were upgraded with new outlet gates and variable speed belt feeders and the reclaim conveyors with 35–degree idlers.

Programmable logic controllers (PLC) allow the belt feeders, overland conveyor, and the radial stacker to run automatically. Ancillary systems include wet dust suppression, insertable dust collection, and a belt ripped detector system.
