Alcan Engineering - Port Study
- Owner: Alcan Engineering Pty Ltd.
- Project: Port Option Study
- Location: Madagascar
- Scope: Investigation conceptual design and capital and operating estimates
Project Background
In June 2007 Alcan Engineering Pty Limited (Alcan), commissioned Soros to undertake a Port Option Study (“POS”), investigating the potential of three main options for the export of alumina from a proposed refinery, with feedstock of bauxite mined from the Manatenina deposit on the Southeast coast of Madagascar.
In addition to examining and assessing the potential port sites, the study also examined:
- The potential of a river-loading site (bauxite only) on the Avibola River for oceangoing mini-bulk carriers.
- Two main export ship loading scenarios
- Jetty and shiploader configurations
- Breakwater Solutions
- Dredging possibilities
- Isolated site capabilities and limitations
- Assessment of Coastal ship loading facilities within the Avibola River
The objective of the study was to consider the full range of solution options and develop concept designs, along with capital and operating estimates for three port sites. A total of eleven options were originally touted as being plausible, the juxtaposition of these options proved three satisfactorily achieved lowest Operating and Capital expenditure costs, (opex) & (capex) respectively.
