Project Background

Roberts & Schaefer Company was awarded a turnkey contract from AES for engineering, procurement, and construction of the limestone preparation facility at AES’s Barbers Point Plant in Barbers Point, Hawaii. The system was successfully completed and in operation in 1991.

The limestone is delivered to open yard storage by rear dump trucks and is stored in the storage yard serviced by front-end loaders. Reclaim of the limestone is through the use of twin dozer traps with feeders and twin elevating conveyors. The reclaimed limestone is delivered by the limestone pulverizer conveyor to the limestone preparation building that houses the twin 20 TPH limestone grinding mills.

The limestone is dried by use of independent air heating systems with the final product collected as dust collector discharge product. Individual rotary vane feeders are provided to maintain system pressure and to regulate the product discharge rate. The pulverized limestone product is conveyed pneumatically overland at the rate of 40 TPH to the limestone plant storage hopper system. Dust collection is provided for the storage hoppers.

The remote location of this project and the lack of building materials necessitated shipment from the mainland with major pre-assembly of the components.
